Beyond Climate Blind Spots: Building Strategies That Can Win


Many climate strategies are guided by assumptions that unintentionally limit their impact. By broadening our perspective, we can develop approaches that are not only more accurate, but also more compelling, more resilient, and ultimately more likely to succeed.


Three blind spots often limit today’s climate conversation:


1. Reducing the environmental challenge largely to climate

Climate change is a defining challenge, but it is not the only one. When environmental concerns are viewed primarily through a climate lens, important connections can be missed. Biodiversity loss, resource depletion, soil degradation, freshwater scarcity, and climate instability are deeply interconnected.


Recognizing these connections reveals opportunities for responses that strengthen multiple environmental outcomes at once, rather than treating them as competing priorities.


2. Concentrating largely on carbon emissions

Focusing exclusively on carbon can make the challenge appear primarily technical: a matter of electrification, renewable energy, digitization, efficiency, and dematerialization. These transitions are essential, but they are only part of the story.


At its heart, our challenge is ecological, if not biological. Human well-being depends on the regenerative capacity of the biosphere, our living support system. While discussions often emphasize the availability of minerals and other non-renewable resources, the more fundamental constraint is the health and resilience of the ecosystems that sustain life.


We are biological beings whose prosperity ultimately depends on a thriving planet with its living biosphere.


3. Presenting climate action as an inconvenient truth

Climate communication often emphasizes responsibility, sacrifice, and the need to reduce emissions for the collective good. Such messages turn engaging into a burden. And they overlook the most powerful driver of change: self-interest.


People, organizations, and nations act not only out of duty, but also out of a desire for security, resilience, and opportunity. Effective strategies align environmental goals with these motivations. When climate action is presented as strengthening people’s prospects, whether through greater prosperity, health, competitiveness, stability, or long-term well-being, it becomes easier to build trust, support, and momentum for change.

 

A Narrative With more Potential to Produce Winning Strategies

Winning climate strategies connect environmental stewardship with human aspirations. They recognize the full environmental context, place the biosphere at the center of the conversation, and align environmental action with people’s desire to thrive.


Rather than relying primarily on appeals to sacrifice or noble deeds, they emphasize the practical necessity of transformation, especially for those whose future depends on navigating an era of increasing climate disruption and growing resource constraints. Effective narratives recognize a simple reality: self-interest is not the enemy of change.


When understood and harnessed well, it can become one of its most powerful drivers.

The following three principles serve me as guideposts for building more effective narratives, each addressing one of the blind spots above.


1. Overshoot Defines the Challenge

“If you can’t solve a problem, make it bigger,” President Eisenhower reportedly advised.

The underlying challenge is not climate change alone. It is ecological overshoot: the growing mismatch between humanity’s demand for resources and the planet’s ability to regenerate what we use and absorb what we discard.


Overshoot has been quantitatively evident since the 1970s and is a common driver behind many environmental symptoms, including deforestation, freshwater depletion, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, and the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Overshoot is the broader reality shaping humanity’s opportunities and constraints. Left unaddressed, overshoot feeds stagflation, resource insecurity, conflict, and economic disruption.


Viewing climate change within this larger context helps connect the dots. It avoids treating climate as an isolated issue and helps ensure that solutions in one area reinforce progress in others. Counterintuitively, broadening the frame can make the challenge easier to solve because it reveals additional motivations, synergies, and pathways to action.


2. Biology Defines the Limits

The fundamental constraint is not carbon. It is biocapacity: the planet’s ability to regenerate resources and absorb waste.


Biocapacity underpins all economic activity and human well-being. It is the foundation upon which resource availability ultimately depends, making it one of the clearest lenses clearest lenses for understanding overshoot.


This perspective expands the conversation beyond technical fixes alone. Electrification, renewable energy, efficiency, and circularity all matter, but they serve a larger purpose: sustaining the living systems that make human prosperity possible.

What ultimately needs safeguarding is not merely a stock of minerals or materials, but the health and resilience of the biosphere itself. After all, every aspect of human prosperity ultimately depends on a functioning living planet.


Importantly, biocapacity can be measured at multiple scales: globally, nationally, regionally, at the level of cities and companies, for individuals, and even for specific activities. This makes it both a practical and a powerful way of understanding our relationship with the planet’s limits.


3. Advantage Defines the Pathway to Change

Information alone rarely changes behavior.


People, companies, and governments act when they perceive a clear advantage in doing so. That is one of the central challenges of overshoot and climate change: we have understood these issues for decades, yet responding to them has rarely been framed as a strategic advantage.


To make sustainability compelling, we need to shift from seeing it as an “inconvenient truth” to recognizing it as an “inconvenience not to know.” For knowledge to become actionable, it must strengthen, rather than compete with, society’s most important priorities.


A useful analogy is that people tend to care more about an empty refrigerator than an overflowing garbage can. Waste can often be ignored for a while. A lack of essential resources cannot.


Overshoot reframes the challenge as an empty-refrigerator problem. It raises questions of resource security, resilience, and future readiness, concerns that lie at the heart of self-interest for individuals, businesses, and nations alike. It is about strengthening biological resource security, not limiting human opportunity.


In this framing, responding to overshoot is no longer simply an environmental obligation. It becomes a way to secure access to what will matter most in a future shaped by climate disruption and growing resource constraints. Rather than relying primarily on moral appeals, it aligns environmental action with tangible advantage.


The critical question becomes:

What will be valuable in a future characterized by climate volatility and greater resource constraints?


Those who prepare for that future build resilience. Those who do not may find themselves increasingly vulnerable to its disruptions.

  1. Overshoot defines the challenge.

  2. Biology defines the constraints.

  3. Advantage defines potentially successful pathways for change.


Together, these three principles shift the conversation from climate action as a moral burden to climate action as strategic preparation for a foreseeable future. In doing so, they align environmental stewardship with human aspirations, creating pathways that strengthen both individual success and collective resilience.
